An overview of oscillator jitter

چکیده

A basic measure of an oscillator’s performance is its frequency stability (or instability depending on one’s point of view). In the long term (timescales of days or years), we refer to frequency changes as aging. On moderate timescales (seconds), the stability of an oscillator is often characterized in terms of its Allan variance [1]. On short timescales (usually less than one second), frequency stability is often characterized in terms the fluctuations of the phase of the signal (phase noise) or the fluctuations in timings of its transitions or the periods of its cycles (jitter).

An Improved VCO Design with Negative Feedback to Reduce Jitter at High Frequencies

This paper presents an improved design of voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) utilizing the three differential cell CMOS inverters for forming the ring oscillator. The differential cell reduces the power supply fluctuations impact on the oscillator jitter while the negative feedback from frequency to voltage converter reduces the jitter at high frequencies. Finally the proposed model is designe...

Power Supply Induced Jitter Modeling of an On- Chip Lc Oscillator

With high bandwidth demand in the telecommunication and networking area, low voltage and low jitter Phase Lock Loop (PLL) is becoming of utmost importance. As the data rate becomes faster, the total jitter budget gets smaller. For instance, an OC-192 transceiver compliant is allowed less than 1ps of total jitter due to random noise (rms jitter) and a maximum of 10ps for the deterministic jitter...

ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF LOW - JITTER OSCILLATORS by Justin Jennings Fitzpatrick

ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF LOW-JITTER OSCILLATORS Justin Jennings Fitzpatrick Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Master of Science This thesis presents an examination of the jitter performance of different oscillator types in the presence of flicker noise, white noise and power supply noise. Key results are achieved using time domain simulations to determine cycle jitter of several d...

Ultralow-repetition-rate pulses with ultralow jitter generated by passive mode-locking of an optoelectronic oscillator

We demonstrate the generation of an ultralow-repetition-rate pulse train with a repetition rate of 19.6 kHz by passive mode-locking of an optoelectronic oscillator. The pulse-to-pulse timing jitter equals 0.06 ppm of the repetition time of the pulses. No significant dependence of pulse duration, pulse waveform, and timing jitter was observed when the cavity length was changed from 150 to 10,400...

Phase Noise and Jitter

Phase noise and jitter are two related quantities associated with a noisy oscillator. Phase noise is a frequency-domain view of the noise spectrum around the oscillator signal, while jitter is a timedomain measure of the timing accuracy of the oscillator period. This paper discusses the relationship between phase noise and jitter in free-running oscillators. The reader is referred to three othe...
